Dubai is one of those places that you hear so much about both in a good way and bad which often leads to people not really knowing what to expect. This was certainly the case for me when we made our first trip to Dubai last year. If you are planning a trip to Dubai here are 6 things absolutely must know before you go.
Laws
There are a lot of scary myths about how strict the law is in Dubai that may sway travellers not to venture to this amazing city. In all reality they are not crazily strict and it is mainly about be respectful in public. Here are a few tips to know before visiting:
- Public displays of affection are a no go. No kissing, cuddling or even holding hands in public.
- Ensure you adequately cover up in public places (outside of hotels and resorts). This applies to ladies and men.
- Goes without saying but no prohibited items including drugs, firearms and pornographic material.
What to wear
As mentioned above, you must dress modestly in public areas. As a minimum ensure your shoulders are covered and legs are covered to above the knee. Men must keep their shirts on too. Around hotels, pools and resorts it is fine to relax and wear usual beach attire.
Getting around
As the beach, the city and the palm are pretty spread out it is best to hop into a taxi to get around. There are always plenty lining the streets to flag down and hop in. Although Dubai is expensive, taxis are really cheap. Just ensure the driver turns the meter on as soon as you get in.
Alcohol
If you go out to a restaurant do not be surprised when alcoholic drinks are not on the menu. Alcohol is only served in hotel bars and restaurants. If you fancy a few drinks ensure you book into a restaurant within a hotel or resort. You do not have to be staying at that hotel to eat at the restaurant or drink in the bar. Dubai also has some amazing clubs, all located within hotels so you can party the night away with a few drinks.
Call to prayer
If you have been to any Muslim country before you may be familiar with the call to prayer sound. There are public speakers everywhere which play the sound 5 times a day. No matter where you are, you will hear it.
Pre-book
If you are planning to eat at any of the fancier restaurants you will need to pre-book your table. The same applies to any trips to the desert or up the Burf Khalifa.
Just remember to have fun and always be respectful and abide by the laws and customs of the place you are visiting.
