7 of the best free things to do in Kalbarri | Road to Wander

Kalbarri is an outdoor enthusiasts dream.  With incredible coastal cliffs to the west and impressive gorges following the Murchison River to the east, there is something to inspire everyone.  And the best part about it is that the top things to do are absolutely FREE.  Here are 7 of best free things to do in Kalbarri, Western Australia.

Kalbarri is a beach-side town surrounded by a national park, 590kms north of Perth, Western Australia.  Little Kalbarri really surprised me.  In fact, we almost missed it off our Western Australian road trip completely.  I am so glad we had a change of heart and stopped in to experience this amazing patch of Australian nature.

Inland gorges

Kalbarri town is situated at the mouth of the Murchison River.  Over centuries the river has carved out spectacular winding gorges just a short drive from town.  Hop in the car to explore the impressive views along the river.  Be sure to stop in to take a snap of Coral Coast’s most iconic site, Natures Window.  There are plenty of walking trails in and around the gorges to keep you occupied ranging from an easy 1km return all the way up to the moderately challenging 8km Loop Hike.

Coastal cliffs

South of Kalbarri town lies miles of spectacular cliffs to explore.  Jump in the car and take a drive along the winding coastal roads.  Each lookout has an allocated car park with a short walk to the cliff edge.  The sandstone cliffs plunge 100 meters into the pounding waves.  You can see the power of the waves at spots like the Natural Bridge and Island Rock where the waves have eroded the rock away from the coastal edge.  There are also a few walk trails ranging from a few meters to the 16km Bigurda Trail.

Whale Watching

Humpback whales migrate passed Kalbarri from June all the way through to November.  You can watch these incredible giants from the coastal cliffs.  Look carefully for the tell tale sign; puffs of water from the whale’s blowhole.

Wild Flowers

Kalbarri is infamous for it’s incredible wildflower display.  The heathlands come to life with over 1000 species blooming in spectacular colour from July to October.

Fishing

Kalbarri is most well known as a top fishing destination. Take to the sea or to the Murchison River, there are plenty of spots to drop your line.  With cooler weather visiting from March to May is a great time to spend a day on the water.

The Pink Lake

I do love a pink lake and Hutt Lagoon pink lake is one of the most impressive.  Drive south of town to catch a glimpse of this incredible display of colour.

Surfing

For experienced surfers, Jakes Point left-hander is one of the best in the state. You might even be lucky enough to share the waves with dolphins.

For more information visit the Kalbarri Visitor Centre on arrival.
