Pondering at Jurien Bay

I have something a little different for you today.  I challenged myself to write something completely out of my comfort zone and for me that means getting personal.  This is my take on a letter to my younger self.  So here it is, a raw, therapeutic, good for the soul letter to my 13 year old self.

First things first.  That skirt, it’s way too short, listen to your mother!  Those spots, don’t worry, they will clear up soon.  Don’t be heart-broken when Nsync split up, JT is coming back even better on his own!  Enjoy school while you are there, you will actually miss it when it’s all over.

It’s ok that you don’t know what to do with your life.  A job doesn’t define you.  Those dreams of seeing the world are acceptable, that is an option and one you will take.  It’s true what they say ‘the world is your oyster’.  You will come to love this saying, as the world truly is yours to dream about, to discover and endlessly wander.  Don’t listen to the teachers, you don’t have to have a ‘career plan’.  Hell, you don’t even need to go to Uni to get a good job.  Travelling the world and meeting people from all different walks of life will teach you more valuable lessons in life than any classroom ever could.  Things will fall into place without you even realising.  Even though all this new technology, internet and computer jargon is pretty scary right now, you will actually make a career out of it.  It will take you around the world.  You will consult companies across the globe, live in different countries and meet inspiring people.

Your friends, it’s ok if you feel awkward and don’t quite fit in.  They all feel the same too.  Even so, some of your true friends are here and they will still be by your side in years to come.  In fact, you will stand by their side on their wedding days.

Your family is amazing, but you already know that.  Don’t be so crazy, just because you are 13 and can go out without your parents and do whatever you want, doesn’t mean you have to.  Your brothers will stop being mean soon and you will be friends, I promise.

And that boy you pine over, little does your inexperienced little heart know, that really is love at first sight.  That boy will be the love of your life.  Soon he will ask you to be his girlfriend.  You will have fun growing up together; being silly and making big life-changing decisions.  Supporting each other along the way.  He will make all your dreams come true.  You will travel the world together, make a home together and eventually he will ask you to be his wife.

And most importantly, just know that it will all be ok.  Every decision and every mistake you make now will lead us to where we are now … happy.

What if I fall?  Oh but my darling, what if you fly!

À la perchoine, Jodie at 26 years old

This was so therapeutic to write and it made me feel like a weight was lifted.  I’d love to write this again in another 10 years, if or when I become a mother, a grandmother.  What would you say to your 13 year old self?
